Here are a handful of wonderful educational resources that I have used with my class and individuals. These websites allow for personalized learning as well as making learning fun and enjoyable. I could have added a ton of different websites that I find useful to have in my tool belt but these are some of my favourites. Click on the pictures for links to the specific websites.
Khan Academy is a great website for students who need extra help or some review. It touches on all subjects with a great focus on math concepts. It is 100% for for teachers, students, and parents. It has video lessons as well as activities for students to work through. If you don't know and answer it will work through the question with you or you can watch a video lesson. The videos are explained at an appropriate level as well for the age group. The interface allow the teacher to keep track of students progress and see how much "active" time the students have.
This is another great website for students. The educational resource allows students to build their math skills through personalized learning, fun games, and mastery skills. The games allow you to challenge local peers or other from across the globe. The interface allows the teacher to go in a assign certain math content to their students and allows you to keep track of your students progress. This is a paid program and is purchased as a school or district license. There is a home user option that cost $19.95/month ($99 a year).
Prodigy is another great math resource I have seen and used in the classroom. This website is more gamified rather than building skills. Math skills are built into the design of the game, however, there is no way to track students progress. This is a resources that would be best suited for after a lesson or to fill some time. The website has a "basic" feature that is free for anyone to access and then has some paid features to it as well. The paid features don't inhibit the math learning, they are there to enhance the game play. The paid features start at $6.25/ month.
Epic! is an amazing website for readers of all levels. It allows students to search for popular books for them to read. It has options on it for students to listen to it being read to them and they can follow along. Epic! also has audiobooks on it for kids to listen to. Epic! has a free option which allows you to access one book a day. Its paid subscription $80/ year and allows you to access over 40 000+ books. Most schools/districts already have a subscription.
As previously mentioned on this website, Google Read & Write is a great extension of Google Chrome and assist students learning in many ways. One of the biggest assistive technology pieces to come out of this feature is the speech-to-text feature. This allows students to struggle with writing, talk to the computer and it put their thoughts down on the page. It has many different function as well that can aid in the students learning. This extension is free for anyone who uses Google Chrome and any of the Google suite features. For more information on Google Read & Write click here.
